A mild earthquake originating in India’s Assam state shook parts of northern Bangladesh on Saturday afternoon, causing brief panic among residents in several districts near the border.

According to seismic monitoring reports, the earthquake measured 3.6 on the Richter scale and struck the Mankachar area of Assam at around 2:40pm local time.

The epicentre was located near Assam’s Dhubri district, roughly 34 kilometres from the affected border region. Seismologists believe the tremor was relatively shallow, which made the shaking more noticeable in nearby areas despite its moderate magnitude.

Residents in northern districts of Bangladesh reported feeling sudden vibrations in homes, offices and shops shortly after the quake occurred. Many people said doors, windows and furniture shook for a few seconds, prompting some residents to move outdoors in fear of a stronger earthquake.

No immediate reports of casualties or major structural damage were received from either India or Bangladesh following the tremor.

Disaster management authorities and local administrations continued monitoring the situation for possible aftershocks, though no further seismic activity was immediately reported.

Bangladesh and northeastern India lie within a seismically active region, and mild to moderate earthquakes are occasionally felt across the area due to tectonic movements beneath the Himalayan belt. Experts often warn that shallow earthquakes can be felt more strongly near the epicentre even when their magnitude is relatively low.
