Seven Bodies Recovered in Keraniganj in 10 Days

A series of body recoveries in Keraniganj over the past 10 days has triggered concern among residents, with seven bodies found in separate incidents, raising questions about the area's law and order situation.

The cases include alleged murders, a stabbing, a mysterious death and the recovery of the bodies of three women and a mason. While police have solved several of the incidents, investigations into others are still underway.

The latest case occurred on Saturday when the body of Md Chan Mia, 65, a mason, was recovered from an abandoned brick kiln behind Ad-din Momin Medical College Hospital in Shuvadya Union of South Keraniganj. Police said the body bore injury marks and was sent to Sir Salimullah Medical College (Mitford) Hospital for an autopsy.

According to local residents, one body has been recovered every one or two days over the past 10 days, creating fear and anxiety in the area.

On 30 July, police recovered the body of Liyakat Ali, 60, an auto-rickshaw driver, from Hazratpur's Bhatarakandi area. Investigators said he had been stabbed to death, and the suspects have since been arrested.

One of the most widely discussed incidents was the killing of teenager Tanzila in Madinanagar on 28 July. Within 24 hours, the Police Bureau of Investigation (PBI) arrested her boyfriend, Rana Howlader. Police later recovered the alleged murder weapon, a mobile phone and stolen jewellery based on his information. He also reportedly gave a confessional statement before a court.

On 26 July, police recovered the body of Momtaz, 30, from the Kholamora area. Authorities later arrested Mintu, identifying him as the prime suspect in the murder.

On the same day, the partially decomposed body of an unidentified woman was found in an abandoned plot inside the Jhilmil Residential Project. The PBI, the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) and local police are working to identify the victim.

Earlier, on 21 July, Ruhul Amin, 40, was found hanging in the Kholamora area. Police said he had reportedly been suffering from financial hardship and have registered an unnatural death case while continuing the investigation.

Additional Superintendent of Police (Keraniganj Circle) Mohammad Jamilul Haque said the high-profile murder cases involving Momtaz, Tanzila and Liyakat Ali had already been solved and the accused arrested.

He added that investigations into the deaths of the unidentified woman, mason Chan Mia and the remaining cases are continuing.

Following the recent incidents, residents have called for increased police patrols, stronger security in isolated areas and residential projects, and speedy investigations to ensure those responsible are brought to justice.
