India on Tuesday summoned Bangladesh High Commissioner M Riaz Hamidullah, hours after Dhaka called in the Indian High Commissioner to express grave concern over recent incidents targeting Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India.
The move marked the second time the Bangladeshi envoy has been summoned by Indian authorities amid strained relations between the two neighbours, following anti-India protests in several parts of Bangladesh.
India’s Ministry of External Affairs said the High Commissioner was informed about the activities of what it described as certain extremist elements that have announced plans to create security challenges around the Indian mission.
The ministry also stated that India rejects what it called a false narrative being spread by extremist groups regarding recent developments in Bangladesh.
It further said the interim government in Bangladesh has so far neither conducted a comprehensive investigation nor shared credible evidence with India concerning the incidents, without elaborating further.
Earlier in the day, Indian High Commissioner Pranay Verma was summoned to Bangladesh’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
During the meeting, Bangladesh conveyed its grave concern over violent protests staged outside several Bangladeshi diplomatic missions in India, urging New Delhi to ensure the safety and security of its missions and personnel.
