A six-member delegation of the European Parliament, led by Chair of the Subcommittee on Human Rights Mounir Satouri, is scheduled to visit Bangladesh on September 15-19 which will hold a series of meetings with the stakeholders.

The delegation will meet Chief Adviser Prof Muhammad Yunus, Foreign Affairs Adviser Md Touhid Hossain, National Consensus Commission Vice Chair Prof Ali Riaz, representatives of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), Bangladesh Jamaat-e-Islami and National Citizen Party (NCP), a senior official told UNB.

The delegation members will also visit Cox’s Bazar and will hold a meeting with Refugee Relief and Repatriation Commissioner (RRRC) Mohammed Mizanur Rahman, the official said.

This month sees visits from Brussels on migration management, human rights, possible election observation and investment financing as both Dhaka and Brussels are looking forward to fruitful and productive discussions on broader issues.

The European Parliament and its subcommittee on Human Rights (DROI) play a crucial role in protecting, promoting and defending human rights globally.

DROI oversees the respect for human rights in the EU's external policies and actions, so that it remains a central element of the EU's international relations, in compliance with the treaties.

DROI also pays a particular attention to ensuring that external policies such as refugee protection, migration and trade remain in line with the EU's human rights obligations and international human rights law.

The subcommittee engages with civil society organizations, human rights defenders and international bodies to gather information and advocate for improvements and action, reports UNB.

Meanwhile, Head of the European Union (EU) Delegation Ambassador Michael Miller engaged with Foreign Secretary Asad Alam Siam in a ‘comprehensive overview’ the Bangladesh-EU relations last week.
