The Embassy of Japan in Dhaka on Monday said the Medical Waste Management Centre in Kushtia district will contribute to improve the health and safety of people involved in waste collection and the living and sanitary environment of the residents.

First Secretary Karasawa Shinju and Second Secretary Makiguchi Yasuyuki visited Kushtia district to attend the inaugural ceremony of the project for ‘Construction of Medical Waste Management Centre’ in Kushtia district provided to the NGO ‘PRISM Bangladesh Foundation’ by the government of Japan through the Grant Assistance for Grass-roots Human Security Projects (GGHSP).

The project is expected to solve the social and environmental problems caused by medical waste and improve the health and safety of approximately 245 people involved in waste collection and disposal, and 1.94 million residents of Kushtia Pourashava, as well as the living and sanitary environment of Kushtia, Jhenaidah, Meherpur and Chuadanga districts, said the Embassy.

“I hope this centre will contribute to improve the health and safety of people involved in waste collection, and the living and sanitary environment of the residents,” said First Secretary Karasawa.

Japan has supported 221 NGO projects through GGHSP since 1989, with a view to enhancing economic and social human security at the grass-roots level.

The total sum of these GGHSP grants extended to approximately USD 17.5 million, reports UNB.
