The Mecca Joint Defence Agreement could provide Saudi Arabia with further military capabilities through Turkiye, Rob Geist Pinfold, a lecturer on international security at King’s College London, has told Al Jazeera.

“Turkiye can offer Saudi Arabia precisely the kinds of capabilities Riyadh currently needs most: technical support for air and missile defence, drones and electronic warfare, intelligence and logistics, as well as potentially greater naval cooperation in the Red Sea,” Pinfold said.

He said that though the agreement remains untested and discussions between the allies are unclear, Riyadh still “prefers a diplomatic solution to these escalations”, and “a package of defensive and technical support that demonstrates the pact has substance” could be the way the agreement gets activated, reports AL Jazeera.

Ankara, Pinfold suggests, could play that role without immediately “drawing Turkiye into another regional war”.
