Dhaka Urges India to Expedite Hasina Extradition, Return Hadi Killers

Bangladesh has urged India to expedite the extradition of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina and reiterated its request for the return of those accused of murdering Shaheed Osman Hadi.

The issues were discussed during a meeting between Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner to Bangladesh Dinesh Trivedi on Monday.

“Bangladesh hopes that India will expedite the process of extraditing Sheikh Hasina,” a press release issued by the Prime Minister’s Press Wing said.

Dhaka also reiterated its request for India to return the accused involved in the murder of Shaheed Osman Hadi.

Trivedi paid a courtesy call on Prime Minister Tarique Rahman at his office at the Secretariat around 11am.

The prime minister welcomed the high commissioner at the beginning of the meeting.

The Indian envoy briefed Tarique Rahman on his experience during his first two months in Dhaka, said Shahadat Shadhin, the prime minister’s deputy press secretary.

The meeting covered a range of bilateral issues, with the prime minister stressing the need to create a suitable environment to further strengthen relations between Bangladesh and India.

It was Trivedi’s first meeting with Tarique Rahman.

Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and Prime Minister’s Foreign Affairs Adviser Humaiun Kobir were present at the meeting.

India appointed Trivedi, a former railway and health minister and veteran politician from West Bengal, as its 16th high commissioner to Bangladesh in April, replacing Pranay Kumar Verma.

He formally assumed office after presenting his credentials to former president Mohammed Shahabuddin on June 25.

Since arriving in Dhaka, Trivedi has held meetings with Foreign Minister Khalilur Rahman and State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaid as part of his diplomatic engagements.
