Dhaka Seeks India’s Clarification on Hasina’s Virtual Event

Bangladesh has sought a clear explanation from India regarding the reported participation of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina in a virtual event scheduled for August 5, State Minister for Foreign Affairs Shama Obaed Islam said on Monday.

Speaking at a briefing at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the state minister said Dhaka wanted to know India's official position on the matter.

She said any political activities by Sheikh Hasina from Indian territory could negatively affect bilateral relations between Bangladesh and India.

"The Bangladesh government wants to know India's clear position regarding the reported virtual participation of Sheikh Hasina in the August 5 programme," she told reporters.

Responding to another query, Shama Obaed said a 22-member US delegation would visit Dhaka as part of maritime security cooperation between Bangladesh and the United States.

She said the cooperation is part of the broader Indo-Pacific framework and reflects continued collaboration between the two countries on regional security issues.

The state minister added that agreements signed with the United States would remain in force as long as they serve Bangladesh's national interests.

According to Indian media reports, Sheikh Hasina is expected to join a programme virtually from New Delhi on August 5. The event is reportedly being organised following her removal from office during the student-led mass uprising in Bangladesh.
