India has appointed senior politician and former rail minister Dinesh Trivedi as its new High Commissioner to Bangladesh, signaling a fresh diplomatic move at a time when ties between the two neighbors are regaining momentum.

The announcement came from India’s Ministry of External Affairs on Monday, confirming that Trivedi will soon take up his assignment in Dhaka. He will replace Pranay Verma, who has been reassigned as India’s ambassador to Belgium.

At 75, Trivedi brings decades of political and administrative experience to the role. A veteran leader from West Bengal, he previously served as India’s rail minister under the Congress-led United Progressive Alliance government. He also held the position of state minister for health and family welfare earlier in his career. In 2021, he left the Trinamool Congress and joined the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), aligning himself with the current ruling establishment in New Delhi.

His appointment comes at a significant moment in Bangladesh–India relations. Bilateral ties had faced strain following the political transition in Bangladesh in August 2024, when a mass uprising led to the fall of the Sheikh Hasina government and the installation of an interim administration under Professor Muhammad Yunus. The shift created a period of uncertainty in Dhaka–Delhi engagement.

However, relations have shown signs of stabilization after a new government took office in Bangladesh under the leadership of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman. Against this backdrop, New Delhi’s decision to send a seasoned political figure like Trivedi as its top envoy suggests a focus on strengthening political communication and rebuilding mutual confidence.

Diplomatic observers see the move as an effort to reinforce engagement at both political and strategic levels, as the two countries look to move past recent tensions and deepen cooperation in trade, connectivity, and regional security.
