Barrister Zaima Rahman, daughter of BNP Chairman Tarique Rahman, highlighted that diversity of ideas, experiences, and perspectives is at the heart of democracy, as people from different backgrounds engage in dialogue for the country’s development.
She made the remarks on Sunday (18 January) at an event titled “Women in Nation-Building: Principles, Potential and the Future of Bangladesh”, organized by Dhaka Forum at the Krishibid Institute in Dhaka’s Khamarbari. The event marked her first policy-related speech before a public audience.
BNP Standing Committee member Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury attended the program as chief guest.
Zaima noted that while she may not have all the answers, every citizen should sincerely contribute to society and the nation, even in small ways. “I have come here to listen, learn and move forward with a spirit of collaboration,” she said.
She also emphasized the critical role of women in national development, stressing that Bangladesh cannot achieve sustainable progress without ensuring women’s active participation.
Economist Dr. Fahmida Khatun highlighted that access to finance remains a major barrier for female entrepreneurs, urging future governments to address these challenges as the country moves beyond least-developed status.
Social worker and entrepreneur Tamara Abed underscored that women should be recognised not just as a demographic group but as vital human capital, with their potential unlocked for broader societal benefit.
The event brought together a diverse group of participants, fostering discussion on women’s leadership, empowerment, and the future of policymaking in Bangladesh.
