Police have claimed that a vagabond identified as Mashiur Rahman Khan Sumon, also known as ‘Psycho Samrat’, was involved in six murders in Savar over the last 6-7 months.

District Additional Superintendent of Police (crime) Arafatul Islam revealed this information while speaking at a press briefing held at Savar Model Police Station on Monday afternoon.

Earlier on Sunday, detectives arrested Mashiur Rahman Khan Sumon, whose killing spree qualifies him as a highly prolific serial killer, from Savar after analysing the CCTV footage of the area.

Later, he was produced before the court on Monday with 10-day remand prayer.

Samrat, son of Salam of Bank Colony area under Savar municipality, used to roam around different areas of Savar.

After August 5, 2024, he had allegedly been moving around for a long time wearing a police uniform and carrying a stick, often speaking incoherently, said police.

Samrat was a vagabond and he reportedly committed his first murder about seven months ago by killing an elderly woman named Asma near the Model Mosque in Savar municipality, said ASP Arafatul.

On August 29, Samrat killed a young man after tying his hands and legs at the Savar Municipal Community Centre.

On October 11, police recovered the body of an unidentified woman, aged around 30, from inside the same community centre.

On December 19, police recovered the burnt body of a man from a toilet on the second floor of an abandoned municipal community centre in the Thana Road area of Savar.

Police said the accused initially confessed to his involvement in the killings. They are investigating whether anyone else was involved in the crimes, said ASP Arafatul Islam.

However, the identities of five of the victims could not be confirmed yet.

Earlier on Sunday, police recovered two charred bodies from an abandoned community centre in Savar municipality area, reports UNB.
