A 35-year-old man was beaten to death by a mob over allegations of theft at Snikantanagar Bazar under Ramnagar Union in Jashore Sadar upazila early Friday.

The deceased was identified as Shamim, son of Chabdu. He was a resident of Baladanga village in the Sadar upazila.

According to police, Shamim allegedly broke into a bKash shop owned by Arafat Hossain at around 2:00am. The shop owner, who had woken up to use the washroom, noticed a person inside the shop through CCTV footage and shouted.

Hearing his screams, local people gathered at the spot, caught Shamim and beat him severely, leaving him critically injured.

Later, he was rescued and taken to the emergency department of Jashore General Hospital, where the on-duty doctor declared him dead, reports UNB.

Faruk Ahmed, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Kotwali Police Station, said police visited the scene after receiving information and are investigating the incident to determine the actual cause of death.
