A mentally challenged man was hacked and beaten to death allegedly by his uncle and cousin in Kotchandpur upazila on Sunday morning, a day after a suspected cattle thief died in a mob beating in the district.

The deceased was identified as Tabibor Rahman, 45, a farmer and resident of Mallikpur village under Dora union in the upazila.

Locals said he had long been known in the area as a mentally handicapped person.

According to local ward member Md Sobusur Rahman and neighbour Ziaur Rahman, Tabibor struck his aunt with a stick while she was sweeping the courtyard of her house in the morning. They said the incident appeared to be related to his mental health condition.

The woman later informed her husband Ujir Ali and their son Shakil of the incident.

Enraged, Ujir and Shakil allegedly chased Tabibor with sticks and sharp weapons. Fearing for his life, Tabibor ran toward a nearby paddy field.

At one point, they managed to catch him and swooped on him.

Ujir and Shakil repeatedly stabbed him in the left side of his chest and beat him before fleeing the scene, locals said.

Officer-in-Charge of Kotchandpur Police Station Azad Rahman said police recovered Tabibor's bloodstained body from the paddy field and sent it to a hospital morgue for autopsy.

Police were conducting drives to arrest the suspects, he said.

Habib Hossain, son of late Ayub Hossain of Arabpur village in Jashore Sadar upazila, was lynched by a mob over an allegation of cattle theft at Badurgachha village of Kaliganj upazila in Jhenaidah early Saturday, reports UNB.
