Patuakhali: Police have arrested a young man named Rimon Islam (25) on charges of extorting money by creating objectionable pictures of women and men using AI in Kalapara, Patuakhali. On Monday morning, a team led by Kalapara Police Station Assistant Inspector Zahidul Islam with the help of RAB-11 arrested him from a rented house in Muslim Nagar area of Fatulla Police Station in Narayanganj.
Earlier, on May 6, Nasir Uddin Molla Mintu of Rahamtpur area of the municipality filed an extortion case with the police station against Rimon and two others. When Rimon was brought to the police station Monday evening, an agitated crowd took up position in front of the police station. At that time, the police assured them of appropriate justice and they left the police station area.
The victim Mintu said that a few days ago, Rimon and his accomplice posted a bad status in his name on a Facebook page called Kalapara Somoy. Later, they attached his picture with a woman using AI and circulated it on that page and demanded a ransom of 5 lakh taka through WhatsApp message. They threatened that the AI video would be released if the ransom was not paid. Finding no other way, Mintu paid them about 1 lakh taka step by step through bKash. Even then, when they demanded more ransom through WhatsApp, he filed a case with the police station.
Kalapara Police Station OC Md. Nazrul Islam said that during the initial interrogation, the accused confessed to demanding ransom. He will be sent to court tomorrow morning. -Gofran Palash
