Smallest fraction of prize money for Test Championship to BD

Dhaka, May 26 — Bangladesh Cricket Board (BCB) is set to receive the smallest fraction of the total prize purse of $3.8 million for the ICC World Test Championship, along with New Zealand, Pakistan, and West Indies.

The BCB will receive $100,000 for finishing in ninth position among nine teams in the Championship. The final of the tournament will be played between India and Australia at The Oval, London, from 7 to 11 June.

The World Test Championship winners will take home a purse of $1.6 million, while the losing finalists will pocket $800,000. The tournament prize money is the same as that for the inaugural edition of the championship, ICC World Test Championship 2019-21.

New Zealand was the winner of the first edition of the championship, and they were rewarded with $1.6 million and the Mace in Southampton two years ago. All nine participants in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 will share the $3.8 million purse. South Africa earned $450,000 by finishing third in the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23 standings.

England made a late resurgence in the two-year cycle with an aggressive playing style and ended up fourth on the table, earning a reward of $350,000. Sri Lanka, who were in the running for a place in the final before their series defeat in New Zealand, dropped down to the fifth spot and will receive a prize money share of $200,000.

Meanwhile, Bangladesh's cricket team has secured a place in the top nine teams of the ICC World Test Championship 2021-23, just as they did in the inaugural edition of the tournament. Despite their struggles in the competition, Bangladesh can take pride in the fact that they have qualified for the championship twice.

While Bangladesh's share of the prize money may be the smallest, the fact that they have qualified for the championship twice is a positive sign for the future of cricket in the country. - UNB
