Russia carried out a large-scale missile and drone assault on Kyiv early Friday, killing four people and injuring at least 34 others, including a pregnant woman, according to Ukrainian officials. Explosions rang out across the capital as burning debris ignited homes, buildings and vehicles.
Tymur Tkachenko, head of Kyiv’s military administration, said emergency crews were deployed throughout the night to respond to multiple impacts. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy reported that Russia used more than 430 drones and 18 missiles in coordinated strikes across the country.
Although Odesa and Kharkiv were also targeted, Kyiv suffered the heaviest damage, with high-rise residential blocks hit by both missiles and drones. Zelenskyy described the assault as a “deliberately planned attack” aimed at inflicting maximum civilian casualties. Moscow claimed the strikes targeted military and energy facilities, a claim Ukrainian officials dismissed.
Ukraine said Patriot air defence systems intercepted 14 missiles, but damage was still reported across eight of Kyiv’s ten districts. Authorities warned of possible disruptions to power and water supplies as firefighters worked to contain blazes in apartments and residential buildings.
Survivors recounted moments of terror. One woman said she woke up to find her hair on fire after debris struck her building. Another described being thrown to the floor by an explosion before she could reach a shelter.
The wider Kyiv region also saw significant destruction, with critical infrastructure and private homes damaged. In Odesa’s Chornomorsk district, two more people were killed in separate strikes.
Russia, meanwhile, claimed it shot down 216 Ukrainian drones overnight in several regions, including Krasnodar, Crimea and Saratov. Local officials in Novorossiysk reported damage to an oil depot and coastal facilities, and said a civilian ship was struck by falling debris.
Ukraine stated it carried out its own long-range attacks inside Russian territory using modified Neptune missiles as part of efforts to weaken Moscow’s military and energy infrastructure.
