Students of Dhaka University and Dhaka College clashed over allegedly setting up a makeshift shop on footpath in the busy New Market area late Sunday.

However, no report of injuries was found though both sides pelted brickbats and stones targeting each other, creating panic in the area.

DU student Imran said that the clash erupted around 1am and continued till 2:30am when they barred a few students of Dhaka College from setting up the makeshift shop in front of their Shahnewaz Hostel in the New Market area.

On information, Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU) Vice President (VP) Shadik Kayem, along with other student leaders, arrived at the spot and tried to calm the situation.

At the same time, additional police personnel were seen deployed in Nilkhet and New Market areas to avoid any untoward incident.

While briefing the media on the spot, Mohammad Jahangir, assistant commissioner (AC) of New Market Zone under Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP), said that a chase and counter-chase took place between students of the DU and Dhaka College over setting up shop, reports UNB.

Later, police dispersed both the groups, he added.
