Speaking to reporters on Monday ahead of Tuesday’s elections, Professor Niaz said, “We want to conduct this year’s DUCSU elections with the highest level of transparency — and transparency will be our greatest strength.”
He mentioned that despite various challenges, the university administration has successfully overcome obstacles in cooperation with all stakeholders.
“Although this is a university-based election, it holds national significance,” he said, adding that a comprehensive security plan is in place. Teachers, proctors, BNCC members, and university volunteers will work together to ensure a smooth voting process.
Support from law enforcement agencies — including Ansar, police, and RAB — will be sought if necessary, but the university will primarily rely on its own proctorial team and volunteers to maintain order across the eight polling centres.
In a video message posted on Dhaka University’s official Facebook page around 3:45 pm on Monday, the Vice-Chancellor encouraged students to participate confidently in the polls.
“You have been looking forward to the DUCSU elections with great anticipation. This event is rooted in the spirit of the mass uprising. It institutionalises our democratic aspirations and creates a united front against injustice. Come and vote without fear — we are waiting for you,” he said.
Professor Niaz highlighted the months-long preparation leading up to the election. Voting arrangements have been made for approximately 40,000 students across eight centres. The process will include a three-tiered security system, CCTV surveillance, and the presence of sufficient polling officers to ensure transparency.
Vote counting will be made public and broadcast through television cameras.
Addressing all candidates, the Vice-Chancellor reminded them of their shared responsibility in upholding democratic values, reports UNB.
“In every election, some win and some lose. But every candidate plays an important role in keeping this democratic institution active. The entire country is watching us. A fair election will set a strong example not just for Dhaka University, but for the nation,” he said.
Special arrangements have also been made to ensure the safety of female students. “Female students can come to the polling stations without fear. The nation has placed its trust in them, and I believe they will honour that trust,” he added.
Voting will take place from 8 am to 4 pm on Tuesday.
The results of the DUCSU and Hall Sangsad elections are expected to be announced by 8 pm.
