Students of Jagannath University (JnU) continued their sit-in protest at Kakrail intersection on Thursday morning, demanding justice for police assault and implementation of their three-point demands.

As of 9:30am, around 50 students remained at the site, blocking traffic and causing congestion in nearby areas. Police said the students had occupied the area overnight. “Some are lying down, some are sitting,” said Sub-Inspector Abdul Kadir of Ramna Police Station.

The protesters vowed to stay until their demands are fulfilled.

The demonstration began Wednesday around 11:45am, when students and teachers set off on a long march toward the Chief Adviser’s residence in Jamuna. Police intercepted the march twice. After breaking through the second barricade, the protesters were met with tear gas, water cannons, baton charges, and sound grenades, dispersing the crowd.

Students regrouped and attempted to advance again but were dispersed a second time by police using batons and sound grenades.

At around 10:00pm, Information Adviser Mahfuz Alam arrived to speak with the protesters but left abruptly after a student threw a bottle at him.

Later, Mahfuz Alam said a meeting between the Chief Adviser and JnU administration was in the works. “We are committed to resolving the issue quickly. Those who attacked me are not part of the July Movement,” he added.

The students’ three-point demand includes:

  • Housing stipends for 70% of students until adequate accommodation is ensured, starting from the 2025–26 fiscal year.

  • Approval of JnU’s full proposed budget for 2025–26 without cuts.

  • Approval and implementation of the university’s second campus as a priority project in the upcoming ECNEC meeting.
