University of Dhaka Assistant Proctor Shehrin Amin Bhuiyan, widely known as Monami, has resigned from her position following the recent resignation of the university’s Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed.
Monami announced her resignation on Monday through a post on her Facebook account, where she confirmed that she had formally stepped down from the post of assistant proctor.
In her statement, she reflected on her experience in the role and described it as one of the most significant chapters of her academic and professional life.
She wrote that during her seven-year teaching career, she had never imagined taking on an administrative responsibility. Despite teaching at institutions including Bangladesh University of Professionals, Jagannath University and the University of Dhaka, she said she had little interest in administrative positions.
However, she recalled becoming enthusiastic when then-Proctor Professor Saifuddin Ahmed invited her on August 28, 2024, to join the proctorial team as an assistant proctor.
According to Monami, the opportunity to serve the country and her university during a period of transition and renewed national aspirations inspired her to accept the responsibility. She said she could not refuse the request of a senior teacher from her department whom she deeply respected.
In her post, she highly praised Professor Saifuddin Ahmed’s leadership, saying she learned valuable lessons from working under him over the past two years.
She noted that the experience taught her how a proctor must handle tense and emotionally charged situations with patience, composure, and dignity while maintaining self-respect and professionalism.
Monami also claimed that despite holding significant authority, Professor Saifuddin Ahmed remained humane, tolerant, and empathetic toward students. She said the proctorial team tried to follow the same approach in dealing with student issues and campus tensions.
Although she refrained from evaluating her own performance, she described working with “an extraordinary leader” and a dedicated team as a memorable and meaningful experience.
Referring to the political unrest and turbulent events surrounding July and the months that followed, she said the University of Dhaka’s proctorial body had faced circumstances unprecedented in the institution’s history.
She expressed hope that the newly appointed proctor and the incoming team would successfully carry out their responsibilities and maintain stability, discipline, and a student-friendly environment on campus.
The resignation comes at a time when the university administration is undergoing significant changes amid evolving campus and national political dynamics.
