Members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) have detained a suspected smuggler along with four gold bars – weighing 452 grams – from the Darshana border area in Chuadanga district.

The arrest was made on Saturday evening in the Baradi border’s Panch Kabar area, said BGB sources.

The detainee, identified as Samar Halder, 27, is a resident of Parkrishnapur village under Darshana Police Station.

According to the BGB, a patrol team from Baradi BOP took position in the area after being tipped off. Around 7:15pm, they signalled an individual riding a bicycle towards the border to stop. When he tried to flee, the BGB members chased and detained him.

A body search led to the recovery of a bundle wrapped in green tape, containing four gold bars.

A mobile phone and the bicycle used in the attempted smuggling were also seized, said Lt Col Nazmul Hasan, commanding officer of Chuadanga Battalion, reports UNB.
