A couple was killed and three others, including a child, were injured when a bus collided with a battery-operated rickshaw on Dhaka-Chattogram highway at Gozaria in Munshiganj district on Monday morning.

The deceased were identified as Billal Hossain, 65, and his wife Alema Begum, 50, of Dandi Luterchar village in Meghna Upazila of Cumilla.

Gozaria Bhaberchar Highway Police Station in-charge Md. Shawkat Hossain said the Dhaka-bound bus from Motlob near Anarpura bus stand rammed the auto-rickshaw carrying Billal Hossain and his family, leaving five people injured.

Locals rescued the victims and took them first to Gozaria Upazila Health Complex and later to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, reports UNB.

Alema Begum died around 11 am on the way to Dhaka and Billal Hossain died after arriving at the hospital, he added.

Shawkat Hossain said locals detained bus driver Kausar Hossain along with the bus and handed him over to  police.

Legal action will be taken, he added.
