Bridge collapses in Kalapara, tourists, local people suffer

A bridge in Kalapara collpased when a truck was crossing it on Sunday 24 Feb 2024.

Patuakhali: The Iron Bridge, which locals call as Shadhur Bridge, built on the Baraharpara Canal in the middle of Mombipara village in Latachapali Union of Kalapara Upazila of Patuakhali collapsed and fell into the canal. On Sunday (February 25) around 11 am, when a cargo truck was trying to cross it. Due to the collapse of the bridge, the people of the tourist including 5 villagers have suffered greatly.

According to local sources, the bridge was built in 2005. The bridge was wobbly for two years and was not repaired. People of 5 villages including Mombipara, New Bazar, Baraharpara, Paurghoja villages of Latachapali union travel through this bridge every day. It was the only easy way for tourists visiting Kuakata to visit the Misripara Buddhist Temple. The entire part of the 80 feet long and 10 feet wide bridge has collapsed and is lying in the canal.

Local Shukhdev Saidyal said, We have been crossing this shaky bridge for two years. However, due to the complete destruction of the bridge, there will be many problems in traffic now. Students will have many problems going to school. Sick patients will suffer greatly. Therefore, I am drawing the attention of the higher authorities, so that the people of 5 villages, including tourists, can be transported by building a new bridge very quickly.
