Four people, including three family members, were killed and three others injured when an oil tanker lorry collided with a CNG-run autorickshaw in Osmaninagar upazila of Sylhet on Saturday afternoon.

The deceased were autorickshaw driver Lalon Mia, 25, son of Farid Mia of Mohammadpur Darka village in Osmaninagar, and Niamat Ali, 35, his wife Azufa Begum, 30, and their eight-year-old daughter Maria.

The injured, including a child, were taken to Sylhet MAG Osmani Medical College Hospital, where they are undergoing treatment. Their condition was reported to be critical.

The accident occurred in the Brahmangram area of the upazila around 2:30pm.

Eyewitnesses said a Padma Oil Company tanker lorry heading towards Sylhet collided head-on with the CNG-run autorickshaw coming from the opposite direction.

The autorickshaw was badly damaged in the collision, leaving seven people, including the driver and a child, seriously injured.

On receiving the information, locals informed the Fire Service and Civil Defence. Rescuers later took the injured to Osmani Medical College Hospital, where four of them died while undergoing treatment.

Abdul Awal, maternal uncle of deceased Niamat Ali, told media that five members of Niamat's family had been travelling in the autorickshaw and three of them were killed.

“Three members of my nephew’s family — he, his wife and daughter — were killed. His two grandchildren survived, one of them aged around four or five,” he said.

Golam Mostafa, Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Osmaninagar Police Station, said the injured were receiving treatment at the hospital.

Hospital sources said the condition of the three injured remained critical.

The accident comes just over two weeks after another deadly crash in Osmaninagar. On August 7, 11 people were killed in a head-on collision between Unique Paribahan and Bengal Paribahan buses on the Sylhet-Dhaka highway, reports UNB.
