Two religious leaders were killed this noon when a speeding pickup truck carrying fish struck their motorcycle in Mirsarai upazila of the district.

The accident occurred on the old DT road in the Chowdhuryhat area of Zorarganj Union.

The victims were identified as Joynal Abedin, 35, son of Abdus Salam and Zahir Uddin, 52, son of late Khorshed Alam, both residents of the Charsharat area under Moghadia Union.

Joynal Abedin was the khatib of the Dargahpara Kala Pirshah Jame Mosque and a local Olamadal leader while Zahir Uddin served as the mosque's muezzin.

Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Zorarganj Police Station Mohammad Abdul Halim reported, "The two men were returning home on a motorcycle when a fish-laden pickup truck coming from the opposite direction crashed into their motorcycle in the Chowdhuryhat area, causing severe injuries to both."

They were quickly rescued and taken to Mirsarai Upazila Health Complex, where the attending physician declared them dead, he said.

The necessary legal procedures, including the post-mortem examination of the deceased, are currently underway, the OC added.
