Driver of a Nasimon, a locally-made three-wheeler, was killed and three others injured as a gas cylinder exploded at a scrap shop in Boro Kumira area of Sitakunda upazila in Chattogram.

The deceased was identified as Arman Hossain. Shop owner Md. Kamal Hossain and employee Md. Helal sustained serious injuries in the explosion while identity of the other injured could not be confirmed immediately.

The explosion took place at a scrap shop called Ismail Iron Mat in the Kumira Mazar Gate area around 2:30 pm today.

The incident occurred while eight gas cylinders were being used for iron cutting at the scrap shop. One of the cylinders exploded during the process, causing significant damage to the tin shed shop, said fire service sources.

They said Arman Hossain lost his life in the explosion while the shop owner, employee and another individual were injured. Local residents rescued them and rushed them to Chattogram Medical College Hospital (CMCH).

Ahsan Ali, an officer from Kumira Fire Service Station, said their team responded swiftly, but the victims had already been taken to CMCH before their arrival.

He, however, noted presence of numerous unauthorized scrap shops along the Dhaka-Chattogram highway in the Sitakunda area, lacking necessary approvals, which can lead to such tragic incidents.

Sitakunda Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mohinul Islam said body of the deceased was sent to the CMCH morgue for autopsy, while the injured individuals are currently receiving treatment at the hospital, reports BSS.
